Women in Nazi Germany
Women's role in Nazi Germany had changed very much from the 1920s to the Third Reich. Back when it was Weimar Republic, German women above 20 years old had every right to vote in an election, and there were at least 20 female members in the Reichstag. Women were also free to go out and work and earn money, they could work in professions, where they are paid equally as much as men does doing the same job, they were treated the same as men were treated. At one point, there were 100,000 German female teachers by 1933, a very large number compared to what's coming for their gender next. Women were also allowed to enjoy a social life outside of their normal jobs and families, and they could dress in anyway they had wanted. Yet the Nazis had a totally different point of view towards the women's role.
The Nazis were very sexist, they thought that the job women should do and ONLY should be ABLE to do is to take care of Children, go to Church, and Cook for the family. They also had to be good w/ housework to be a "proper" Nazi Women. They should also be able to give birth to a lot of children. After the Nazis set the policy of not "recommending" women to work, women were living some pretty dull life, and even so, they could not fight back. Hitler decided that he needed more young fighters, so that means more birth would need to take place. That's when Hitler initiates the rewarding system. To think of this from a modern point of view is very unreasonable, Hitler gave out gold medals to any mothers who had given birth to more than 8 kids, making this seem like a job, instead of something the couples should be able to enjoy it seemed like something they HAD to accomplish otherwise they'd be looked down on. By then, a perfect Nazi family would consist of 6 people, the father, the mother, 2 blonde, white boys and 2 blonde, white girls. But even with such a boring rewarding system, it was still great entertainment and highlight to their incredibly boring life where they accomplish of nothing.
Nazi Germany also decided that women cannot put make up and where trousers, they cannot dye their hair, or do anything that's too fancy. They even set up a "German Women's Enterprise" to arrange classes and radio broadcasts as a motherly figure, teaching good motherhood. Women's role in the society began to decrease as women were removed from their original jobs as doctors, lawyers etc. to full time mothers, and by 1935 they were pretty much just things that can make babies. They had almost no value in themselves. Yet on the bright side, these decisions made by Hitler was very wise for the benefit of the nation, because women were removed from jobs, jobs freed up for men, thus reducing unemployment. Also, the birth rate in Germany had gone up, so Hitler believed that he had made the right decision all along.
