Reichstag Fire
On the night of February 27, 1933, the Reichstag building was burnt. It is considered one of the most crucial date in Hitler's progress to making Germany a dictatorship. Through this event, The Nazis were able to remove one of their strongest opposition, the Communists.
By 1933, Germany was almost on the edge for another revolution, Hitler and his Nazis were as strong as they ever could be. Hitler wanted more for his party, he wanted more for himself, and he certainly wasn't satisfied with only a position of being Chancellor in the Government. As the chance happened to be in Hitler's way, he seized it and immediately blamed the communists for such an unfortunate event. Despite this blame, the hard evidence of them finding a young Dutch business man (a socialist), Marinus Van der Lubbe inside the building, claiming he had started the fire, the Nazis still weren't satisfied. They tried to force the communists into being part of this crime, and they sent in 4 "expert witnesses" who claimed that the fire couldn't possibly only be started by one man. Yet Van der Lubbe was a much better witness than all of the 4 so-called "expert witnesses", and so the judge and the majority accepted that he was the guilty one. He was later executed for arson, originally arson isn't a crime so severe that the person shall be executed, Hitler still managed to shove in a law through the court that states Van der Lubbe shall be executed.
After Van der Lubbe's execution, Hitler still managed to persuade president Hindenburg that Germany was in a stage of emergency, and that the communist conspiracy is pushing the German government to act upon Article 48. Hindenburg buys Hitler's theory, and declares state off emergency. Hitler could now use decrees to govern the German nation w/o going against ANY laws.
